Blogging for Success:
7 Tips to Blogging Successfully
- Write Great Content: Be direct in your message, and put your best stuff first. Give a clear message in your post’s title and make your main point within your first paragraph. Be catchy when choosing your title, but don’t be kitschy. Your title should be interesting enough to intrigue people to want to read more, but not so complex that it makes them pass on reading it.
- Be Brief: Blog posts should be anywhere from 100 to 400 words in length. Write “Above the Fold”, where your reader does not to have to scroll down the page to continue reading your text. To keep your posts succinct, write on one topic per post. Consider chopping up lengthy posts into multiple day posts, thus giving you more content, and making it more likely that readers will return to complete the series.
- Remember to KISS (Keep It Simple Sweetie): Write for an audience of 7th graders (i.e. 13 year olds), unless your audience consists of a niche market of professionals that requires specialized, industry-specific speech.
- Use Keywords Wisely: Try to focus each post on 2-3 keywords, and be sure to include at least 1 in the title of your post, and within your opening sentence. Also, use your keywords as tags/labels to help categorize your content. Over time, these labels combined with the use of your keywords, help search engines decide your area of expertise which will improve your search engine rankings.
- Use Photos, Videos, and Links: Include a photo that can act as a visual representation for each of your blog posts. Choose a picture that highlights the main point of your post, and name the file and/or caption the picture using at least one of your keywords (if possible). Choose to embed video content (from Youtube, for example), instead of uploading video directly into your blog post. It will be easier for visitors to watch a video already hosted online, as opposed to waiting for it to load from your blog. Be sure to link to your previous posts as much as possible, and when linking to other websites, include the name of the site or the relevant keyword associate with the linked site within the linked text (i.e. Search Google).
- End Each Blog Post With A Question: One of the ways to keep your readers engaged is to ask their opinions directly, so end each blog post with a question, thus encouraging your readers to give their feedback and letting you tap into the interests and opinions of the people who are interested in you.
- Stick to a Regular Schedule and Publish Your Posts in Advance: As you follow these tips and create great content, be sure to stick to a regular posting schedule. If possible, schedule your posts to be published in advance, therefore allowing you to write tons of content early, and schedule it to post on a regular basis over a series of days, weeks, or months.
